Lizard time
13Thursday 23 April, 2015 by Uncle Spike
As the weather warms up, the creatures of summer start to appear. Tortoises are already out, and very soon we’ll hear the endless ‘knocking’ as they play ‘mummy’s and daddy’s’ – seriously, it sounds like neighbouring farmers are replacing fence posts, day in, day out 🙂
Snakes will be next month, with all sorts on the prowl through the long grass by mid May. I’m currently in the process of cutting back the knee to waist high weeds and grass, particularly in the immediate ten to fifteen metre vicinity of the house.
But now is the time of the wide-head lizards – the first of the lizards and geckos to make an appearance. Here’s two of them soaking up some sun on the side of my toolshed (SEE RİGHT SIDE WALL).

I have ANOTHER question for you—-we have ticks here, several different kinds…it’s tick season (icky things…they come complete with diseases —Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever)…my question is…do you have ticks there?

Yes, with quite a few deaths in the east of Turkey each year (not a huge problem in the west). When we get one, we take it to the hospital and they send the critter off for a very quick analysis and give a range of shots immediately – sometimes our backward country can surprise us, lol

[…] time for a photoshoot 🙂 Normally I’m just able to capture them by telephoto lens, as in a previous post, but these are real close ups this […]

Thanks for the nice zoom-y photos of the lizards. It looks like one of them has misplaced part of its tail. 🙂

Yep; they break off (and regrow) very easily.

Made me laugh about the tortoises, but I expect it is a real pain having that noise all day and night.

Hey Spike .. what is that growing to the right of the shed? They look for the world like broad beans .. whatever they are they are very healthy. 😀

Yep, well spotted… I have normally harvested them by early April, but this season I planted then almost 8 weeks later; partly coz I was busy elsewhere, disorganised, oh and I reckoned it could be better for us. They can grow here over a 6-7 month season, so plenty of scope. The late planting has ensured that the plants aren’t mega tall with produce only at the tops, and browned off, diseased lower stalks – plus they haven’t therefore been battered by winter storms so much. The beans are small still, but we cook the whole pod (sliced) now, then wait for a few more weeks for the pods to produce beans for freezing down.

Ours are so much better having been (no pun intended) planted later.
