Progressive Instrumental Rock
13Friday 13 February, 2015 by Uncle Spike
As a teenage rebel, I was more into heavy metal and glam rock music than the modern new age stuff, but I also had a love for classical music too (although few were told of such leanings).
One genre I did enjoy, and still do, is electronic music and electric instrumental versions of the classics. Now, to some, that might sound like absolute sacrilege, but the area of progressive instrumental rock was a big part of my youth, so here’s one of the perhaps better known bands that I wanted to share with you.
Sky were an English/Australian instrumental progressive rock group that specialised in combining a variety of musical styles, most prominently rock and classical. The group’s best known members were classical guitarist John Williams, bass player Herbie Flowers (a former member of Blue Mink and T. Rex) and Francis Monkman, a founder member of progressive rock band Curved Air.

I hope you enjoyed this latest flashback from my Tunes I Love series.

Great to hear in your ‘comments’ response that people still respond well to Sky. Like another commentator, I also saw them live (in Melbourne; not my first concert though!) but unlike others, I haven’t found that they have aged very well at all. When I last spun an album (either 1 or 2) I found it almost unbearably polite and mannered. Still, as someone said above, maybe great breakfast music!
Cheers.

I guess it was a different age. I know what you mean though, love their music, but would I sit down and listen to a whole album in one go, perhaps not.

Did you hear the sad news about Steve Strange from the group Visage, he died yesterday age just 55 in Egypt. I only know him because we followed each other on twitter.

Yes, we never know when our time will be up…just keep on living every day as my last, that’s my middle-aged motto 🙂

I’m a fan of prog rock myself, but I didn’t know Sky. Thanks for the introduction and the soundtrack to my breakfast!
Cheers!

Ah, then look back over my Tunes I Love category, and you might recognise a few, especially from my teenage days in the late 70s, early 80s 🙂
