Weekly Photo Challenge: Symmetry (I)
20Friday 13 February, 2015 by Uncle Spike
This week’s first entry from me for the Weekly Photo Challenge is the marvellous Kocatepe Mosque (pronounced koja-tep-e) in downtown Kızılay, Ankara, the capital of Türkiye. Good challenge for which to use these images, as it’s exactly a week ago I was in that very mosque for Friday prayers 🙂
Hope you enjoy this entry.

Oh my this looks amazing and I just clicked on the link to see inside! It is exquisite. is the interior decoration paint or tiles?

Almost always tiles within Turkish mosques. It’s a stunning cavernous place. I love to stay near the back during prayers there, with thousands in front of your eyes (capacity 24000). It’s always crammed too… literally shoulder to shoulder, with every square metre used on the main floor, and all the huge galleries.

I love the light in this photo. The minarets and dome are so wonderfully clear! Inspiring!

Thanks very much. with just a built-in lens, it was difficult to get the scale in the shot.

As with churches, mosque styles vary the world over, but this is a modern interpretation of a classical Ottoman design I would say.
