A Pause In Summer…
16Sunday 10 May, 2015 by Uncle Spike
Early summer it may be (for us), but Mother Nature has her own way of just reminding us who’s boss on this Mother’s day! Late yesterday evening, I was finishing off gathering the last of the hay. Using the large 50kg feed and fertiliser sacks, I was there until almost dark stuffing the hay/straw in as tightly packed as my arms could muster. Some rain had been forecast, but one never quite knows if it’ll hit us or not at this time of year…

…well let’s just say that it did !!

The morning was bright and still warm; not ‘hot’, but in the high 20’s (80’s), so cooler than usual, but still normal for the cusp of spring/summer. Suddenly the clouds appeared over the mountains, and a deluge of soggy stuff and hailstones pounded the farm!

It was still fairly warm at the same time – very weird. The chickens were most put out; however the good news was that it probably scared off Mrs Fox from ‘inviting’ another one to join her gang – we’ve lost four this past week, and I chased her off across the orchard just this morning in fact!

What the trees and plants and veggie seedlings will quite think of all this, only time will tell. Certainly, the plum trees had much of their leaves ‘shredded’ in minutes!! Very strange weather…

Gosh – how strange. Hope the plants and especially the plum trees are OK. Someone was only telling me the other day how their big trees with new leaves had had them shredded by strong winds. I don’t know how trees cope with that. I wonder if they grow more.

Dunno…. they are in fruit now, so probably doesn’t matter a great deal. We’ll see 🙂

HAIL! Hail is a ugly thing. Rain is much better than hail. Geez.
