Flogging HiFi Equipment with Michael Jackson
12Friday 02 January, 2015 by Uncle Spike
Back in the early ’80s I found myself working in an electrical and photographic retail store called Dixons, on the south coast of the UK. Part of my shop-floor domain was the hi-fi section. This had some advantages, coz you got to play with all the latest equipment – demonstration of course being key to flogging it to Joe Public.
Each of us had certain tunes we’d blast out in the hopes of impressing potential buyers, and for me, one such tune was the now classic from 1982, “Beat it” by the late great master of music, Michael Jackson, from his infamous Thriller album. Much to the dismay of Ron, the branch manager, the brilliant guitar solo of the highly talented Eddie Van Halen was heard for half a mile around the store on a regular, almost hourly basis. But it did shift the stock – sales were good! Thanks to Michael & Eddie 🙂
I hope you enjoy this addition to those Tunes That I Love.

Yes, shame he couldn’t have been left alone to live a private life…

It is entirely possible you sold me a mini stack with that master stroke, Uncle S. I’m pleased to report it lasted well until the tape player was front loaded with pizza circa 1994 by no. one son. Never really recovered from the stringy cheese.

Hahahaha…. all kids try that, or a variation of. Ours involved a CD player and a chocolate bar.

Dixons — gosh you contributed to the greater good of that great and powerful company! I’m a little confused about which company owns which nowadays, but am I right in thinking that PC World is an offshoot of Dixons, as well as there being some connection also with Currys? They seem to be in competition and yet I’m not sure that this is the case in reality.

Spooky you should ask… I met Stanley Kalms, then CEO of Dixons Photographic, on the day the takeover of Curry’s was announced. He said “Can’t stay long lads, I need to go and grab a curry!”

Oh, that brought back memories (but…what are those things in that animation?).
I remember listening to that guitar rift and I think that’s the first time I discovered Van Halen. Good stuff.

Dunno, some just different version of the video I guess – the original wouldn’t play in our region, hence I chose that one 🙂
