Music that finds one’s soul

Those who follow this blog regularly will know of my quest in finding and sharing music that is special to me under the tag of Tunes That I Love. Well, this is something that I came across on BookFace this week that hit the spot, so to speak.
It’s actually a video of one of those Flashwotsits, where folk sing or dance in public… However, this is not what you might expect. So sit back, relax the mind, and enjoy a 13th century Icelandic hymn “Heyr himna smiður”, performed by “Árstíðir” at a train station in Wuppertal, Germany.

Absolutely beautiful, especially using the station for amplification. In music from that time period, the pauses between phrases were as important as the notes themselves, and use was made of huge majestic buildings with uncluttered space, such as cathedrals, to carry the sound of the last note of a phrase through the pause, so the next phrase began on the tail of the echo. I’m not sure that I’m explaining it very well, but it’s what they’re doing here within that station foyer. If they were to sing plainchant, the effect would be even more obvious. For a singer,especially of sacred music, it is a wonderful meditative experience to produce music in a space such as this. You can see that the members of Arstioir are quite transported by the music (better than going on a train any day!).

so very beautiful – it’s amazing what the human voice and the right acoustics can do – very moving…when did this happen? And indeed, good soul food!
