Kumquat success
8Tuesday 05 January, 2016 by Uncle Spike
Whilst many crops have not favoured the weird weather of 2015, the humble little kumquat tree seems to be as happy as Larry, whoever that was. These deliciously tasty little bundles of Vitamin C don’t seem to mind extreme summer temperatures, prolonged winter storms, or even a heavy frost, unlike say lemons, which just go to pulp in hours.

Another couple of weeks and we’ll be scoffing these every day, as the clementines come to an end. At least it keeps the colds at bay 🙂
.
Love kumquats – not easy to find in our local markets though!

Hey Spike … I don’t think I’ve eaten Kumquat before. What do they taste like?

They are a strange little tiny fruit, with both a sharp and sweet taste all in one. You eat the whole fruit – size of a big grape 🙂

Trying kumquats was on my 52 New Things last year after reading one of your posts. I was spectacularly underwhelmed by them.
I’m afraid that what we can buy in the grocery stores during a Canadian winter are likely a far cry from the juicy freshness you can get off your own trees 😦
Enjoy a few of them for me please.

😦 I can imagine like most citrus fruit, they are picked and shipped long before they sun-ripen, which changes the taste completely. Oh well, worth a try.

My kumquat tree survived the drought this summer and is back in full force. Full of fruit. Lovely post. I enjoyed seeing your tree.

Tough little things. Ours was flowering when it was 43 celcius.
