Logs of the future?

Down in the lower olive grove, we have a rather tall lonesome pine that is growing at a weird, almost precarious angle. It is also sapping all the water from the olive trees, and creating shade over the citrus trees in the main orchard. One day it’ll have to go… (not as if we are short on trees around these parts!)

Thinking winter 2016-17 will be about right, considering the firewood situation in our store. Should be a fun challenge, trying to fell this beastie without splatting the neighbouring olive trees. Love a challenge anyway… food for thought as it’ll need some careful planning 🙂
As for anyone gonna say “Noooo, you must hire an ‘expert’!”, well, we live in rural Türkiye, where everyone has a chainsaw (as well as a shotgun and other such toys) and everyone is an ‘expert’… Yeah right; basically I know I can do the job as good as, and probably better than anyone I’d have to pay to undertake this – plus the experience of felling, lopping and chopping over a few decades should do the trick. This isn’t the west; we are middle east, so H&S rules don’t exist.

I love the perspective of the photo … great shot! As you said, this is going to be a beast to take down. Good luck!

Huge project. Can it be accomplished on stages to preserve the olive trees?

Possibly, but lopping one of these is dangerous… so I prefer to fell and take the risks to the trees. I can remove the branches and top couple of metres, and then fell the main trunk in one. Theory.
