Winter road trip: Bolu Mountains

12

Sunday 13 September, 2015 by Uncle Spike

Just love writing this post today…. it’s mid-September and therefore the back end of summer. It’s pushing 38C still (100F) and no signs of our 20th September first storm as yet – that’s the date we normally have our first big electrical storm since the end of April. But everything’s late this year…

.

However, back to reminiscing on last winter 🙂

As mentioned in an earlier post, when driving from Istanbul to Ankara, you pass through the beautiful mountains near Bolu.

For those of us from the dry forested mountains of the southwest, this is a real treat. Snow; proper snow at that!

Then one up on the high Anatolian Plateau, yep…. more snow 🙂

Needless to say, we had some of the obligatory ‘fun and games’ when parked up at the Bolu road services.

Then it was back on the road for the picturesque drive on through the mountains. With hardly any traffic, the clear road made the journey quite pleasurable.

Post card perfect! In Pacific Northwest USA, Autumn is early. We went most of the summer without rain, and set records for the number of days with temperatures above 90°f (32°c) — very unusual. All the fruits and vegetables matured early. Wonder what weather we’ll get next! I appreciate all the seasons and seeing snow in the high mountains, where one would expect it this time of year in Türkiye, is lovely.

  2. After almost 40 years living in cold and snow for almost half a year, I am happy to winter in the desert. On the other hand, as your photos so aptly demonstrate, snow adds a dimension of beauty to every landscape.

Great photos. Lovely snow too! Are the expected storms scary?
