Winter in Istanbul: Metro & Trams

4

Istanbul is certainly a city of contrasts, that’s for sure… With high-rise complexes and 21st century shopping malls on the one hand, and on the other you’ll find in the next street, historical buildings that have seen stood for centuries.

Transport too varies, but I love nothing better than to get around on the trams. You have to watch the time of day, or you’ll no doubt end up squashed in with 800 others should you venture near the main city areas during any of the peak periods.

One day, I took young Cousin Spike Junior off for ‘boy day’. We travelled on various ferries back and forth across the Bosphorus, then jumped on a tram… we got off 13 stops later I think; just staying on till we decided to go elsewhere 🙂

But I love the old trams, the original streetcars I found on the Asian side in particular. I’m no train or tram-spotter I can assure you, but I certainly appreciate their history, their elegance and their bells, having been close to getting squashed a couple of times one morning!

  1. Reminds me of Tokyo…trains, taxis, cars, tall buildings, and lots of people.
I was overwhelmed by all of the things that occupied a relatively small area.
Just a wee bit claustrophobic, I was!

  2. I love trams too! They have them in Melbourne and they are such a great mode of transport. Sadly we don’t have them in Auckland ..

Big cities seem to be the same all over the world…Big, full of ‘wow’ stuff and lots of shiny go fast things. I wonder if people in the big cities think where farmers live are rather dull.
