Winter in Istanbul: Cats

7

Street cats in Türkiye are generally despised or loved; with little room for any other emotional distinction, so it would seem. At restaurants (remembering we eat outside 90% of the time), our feline friends are often served a glass of flying water or the tap of a shoe upon their behind as they scamper away from the table. Yes, often they are a pest, but in some areas, it’s quite the opposite.

One such place I found was in Moda, on the Asian side of Istanbul. That’s more than just an area of the city of Istanbul, it’s also its geographical setting, as we are talking the southern coast of the Bosphorus, so therefore on mainland Asia, rather than at the southern extremity of continental Europe.

In Moda, the moggies rule. As you can see from these shots, they ‘own’ park benches, and some have even commandeered their own transport…

They sit atop of walls, staring at you as you walk down the street…

Or meow a greeting as you wander past their favoured window…

  1. It is investing interesting how other countries interact with and treat cats and dogs. In America, population control is very important, and the animal control truck is frequently seen. I am sad to think what happens after the animals are taken to the shelter, but i also don’t want them running loose where they could chase or attack me. I am especially concerned about the stay dogs, who can be aggressive.

I’m a cat fan. I love them, but also appreciate that feral cats are a problem in some areas. These photos all show some beauties .. who can resist those cute little faces?!

Me? I’m a fan of cats! Love this post! (Although, I do believe in nurturing–too many is way too many.)
