Winter in Istanbul: Images of Kadıköy

Located on the southern shores of the Bosphorus, and therefore sat firmly in Asia rather than Europe, Kadıköy (pronounced “kad-er-koy”), is a lively, bustling mix of residential and commercial life.

There is allsorts to be found here; with streetcars (trams), waterways, shopping streets, open markets, expensive waterfront apartments, narrow backstreets, one-way traffic systems that took us a few goes to navigate, and of course a mass of traffic for which Istanbul is now so famed. Oh yes, and canoes…

Eateries and coffee shops are a plenty.

It’s quite the trendy spot come the evening.

Typical of many Turkish cities, Istanbul in particular…

Roasted chestnuts are always to be found on a winter’s day 🙂

My passion was to walk along the waterfront.

You could go miles if you felt like it!

Even mid-winter, the gardens are still a welcoming sight.

These are just next to where many of the ferries arrive.

One of the things I miss here in this part of Australia is roasted chestnuts from a street vendor. In Scotland my dad and I went to the market on a Sunday afternoon and there was always a roast chestnut man there. I only ever saw one in Adelaide at the central market – but that was years ago. Perhaps they still exist in other places – the Eastern States – where there are more Central European people. Yes, I buy them in season and roast them myself, but although good, it’s just not the same.
