Late January, first light
Out there, walking a few kilometers
To take in the beauty of the coming day
And capture the tranquility of a city awakening

when do you recommend the best time of the year to visit Istanbul?
Visitor-wise, it’s busy pretty much all year round Andrew, but of course, the summer (June-Aug) is the peak as you’d expect. Climate is similar to say south coast UK in that there is a significant summer (July/August), but by first week of Sept it cools down rapidly (12 hours drive north of us). Often windy and rainy as weather systems migrate between Black Sea and Marmara. They have bouts of snow that gridlocks the city, but that’s just say 3-4 times a winter. I would say end May, early June, or September (but you may risk autumn storms). Bit like the UK – unpredictable 🙂
I’ve been there in late January (it was cool/wet), October (windy), July (hot/sticky), November (rained), May (cool/sunny(….
No need for a ‘tour’. Center yourself in Sultanahmet area and you can walk to most places, or use excellent metro/trams. If not that adventurous, hire a personal guide for 3 days and see more than anyone else! (mail me if you need recommendations etc)
Thanks Spike, that is useful stuff!
Thanks for the walk. You caught the atmosphere beautifully…..wonderful moments and photos!
Love capturing these quiet times in otherwise busy places 🙂
The sunrise over the city looks just like the sunrise here in Cebu! We know that smog is not good, but the way it filters the sun’s light is just amazing.
Maybe one day I can get to see your part of the world too 😀
Lovely set of early morning images, Spike 🙂
Thanks Sue. Sometimes I get frustrated when my equipment and know-how simply doesn’t capture / reproduce what I saw, but these are some of my personal favourites 🙂
