Strawberries – yay!

Last autumn I took the decision to move all the strawberry plants. Where they had been for a few years was, I think, too exposed, and so when the summer heat started, the fruit literally ‘dried up’. The plants were also a bit messed up, so I dug the lot up, selected the best eighty or so plants (mostly babies that will have a better lifespan), and transplanted them to a new area – and dumped well over fifty old/crappy plants. The new site is under one of the clementine trees within the large enclosed veggie area, ergo, no chooks to scoff the strawberries! (but they do line up the other side of that fence and drool)

And now, some seven months later

The plants are well established now and I reckon the mix of goat and chicken poop seems to have done the trick at reviving the plant stock. The site chosen, under that tree, should also prolong our strawberry season as half is in relative shade for much of the day, so when summer strikes in a few weeks time, and the current temps of 32-35C (90-95F) will be replaced by a norm of 40-47C (104-117F), we might still get a few strawberries to munch on 🙂

But with the daft weather we’ve had this year, everything is well over a month late, however, it seems the strawberries are looking good; unlike the apricots which are absolutely non-existent this year.

Woohoo! Lucky you! I didn’t get to plant any strawberries yet – might do them for next year. They’re one of my favourite fruits. Enjoy!

YUM! We used to grow strawberries when I was younger, too. It was always a battle of us against the possums, though haha

  6. I’d say that poo has done wonders! Do you have to protect them from the birds Spike?
