Friends of the Cacti

Wednesday 13 May, 2015 by Uncle Spike

It’s that time of year when our various cacti have their babies. We have three species, but these large cacti, which grow wild here, are our most favoured. Why? Well, they don’t produce itchy white stuff that sticks to your skin and irritates you for days, nor do they give you a nasty surprise on the derrière when weeding anywhere near them; so yes, these are the good guys of the cacti world 🙂

Each year a few simply blow over in the winter storms, and a few I chop back with the machete as they can over-grow their welcome if not kept in check. Then each May these tiny alien-like things appear, which soon become yet more of their huge ‘leaves’. But for now, they are still cute!

And they bring with them a few friends…. these large black ants seem to love the milk of these leaves, and spend hours farming them. Well, I guess that’s their purpose anyway 🙂

Cacti plants – lovely in fenced in gardens or pots.

Hated here by the sheep and cattle farmers!

Here we eat the leaves of the prickly pear…just peel and dice up in a salad. Use a small piece. Or you can pick the fruit and either pickle it or jam it.

    Your photos are very good!

  4. Since receiving four spectacularly painful bites from one years ago, I hate ants.
