Peach Blossom

Tuesday 05 May, 2015 by Uncle Spike

These shots were taken a few weeks back actually, and feature some of our young peach trees. The blossom on peach trees are exquisite, with their combination of light and dark pinks, and a natural draw for my camera 🙂

The buds form on two-year old branches, so pruning is critical.

The flowers arrear on either side of the branch, forming a nest of colour, and later, perhaps some fruit. Nature does its bit in sorting out which flowers will go to create fruit, and which will drop; but should too many form, I nip off some to ensure the tree can sustain the fruit through to maturity.

One of the most colourful of all the fruit blossoms we have on the farm.

    How big is your orchard?
With all those blooms, it must be a bee paradise.
Do you go into honey production also?

Your blog is a credit to you with the information
that you give and the wonderful photography.
    Well done, mate.
    Cheers

Thanks Colin, glad you like it…

Just a smallholding, but enough for one person to handle (7500sqm). Many of our neighbouring farms have hives, mostly for pine pollen honey (surrounded by pine forested mountains), but the hives are mostly around here during winter/spring. We get honey from our neighbour – probably from our own trees in fact 🙂
