Our First Iris…. Ever

Awaiting the grand ‘opening’ of our first ever Iris flower.

These are two very slightly different shots. Anyone care to comment on which is better, and why? (just so I can learn from your experience) 🙂

Why is it your first? Are they difficult to grow in turkey?

Phew, relieved to see later comments are going for the second. It gets my vote because of the richer colours which, I suspect, is nearer to reality and the flower is the star of the picture. Not sure why being off centre, in this case, is an advantage? Is this more to do with picture cropping anyway?

Yes it probably is… I was a ‘first’ man tıo begin with, but now leaning towards the ‘second’.

The second. It’s more focused on the flower and the background is less. The colors in the flower are richer than the first.

I would have to go with the first one, because it is always more pleasing to the eye to show a plant not exactly in the middle of the photo. Although you are not exactly obeying the ‘rule of thirds’ it is at least off centre and at a bit of an angle. You can also see more of the markings as Paula already mentioned. That said I prefer the background in the second shot – it is more out of focus and so less distracting (although Maureen preferred the rocks so you can never please everyone!), but especially I like the green colours that pick up those on the iris. Now go and do that shot again combining the two photos! Oops you can’t it has probably opened! Irises are one of my favourite flowers, but they are very difficult to photograph well when open – at least I find them so. I look forward to seeing your shots.

Thankyou for all your insight there – that really helps. I too prefer the green background, but wasn’t so happy with the focus. I’ve always been a ‘centre’ kind of guy, but slowly I’m learning to be brave and go for 40/60 if not thirds 🙂

Agreed its a bit like apples and oranges but he first one. I love color and the first has more of the purple.

Hi Spike,
Tough call. Almost like comparing apples to oranges. Don’t look like same flower at all!. But, I choose this first one because of the juxtaposition of the pudgy spike of a flower against what looks like a field of rocks. (Sorry if it’s, like, your front yard.)

I like them both but my preference leans to the second photo…I like the touch of green background and the tiny opening which is visual to the eye at the base if the bud. 😉

While the detail is certainly clearer in the first shot, the angle change to backfill with greenery does contrast better with the blue. As for the opening, well spotted – hadn’t dawned on me of course 😀

I like the first shot better – the iris is off-center and the angle shows better shows the interesting patterns on the outside of the petal…in my humble opinion
