Our extra large red roses
8Saturday 02 May, 2015 by Uncle Spike
Following on from looking at our first roses of the season, we have been fortunate enough to have a full show of red roses this year. We’ve had a few before, but not as many, and certainly not as healthy or as beautiful. You’ll note the spotted leaves; well that is down to large volumes of pine tree pollen in the air at this time of year, which was brought down by some recent rains.

I am sure these won’t last that long, as it’s warming up day by day, and the summer temperatures here pretty much spell the word ‘doom’ for our flowering roses. Some will still flower, but the very high temperatures of southwest Türkiye and the hot winds of summer often just end up roasting the flowers on their stems, believe me!

But this year has produced something different altogether, some extraordinarily large flowers. Take this pair of beauties for a start. I’m guessing it’s the wet winter that is responsible, but whatever the reason, it’s a good result.

I’m often sticking my paw into the frame, but on this occasion it seemed the best way to show off the sheer size of the bloom. I don’t know how normal these are; but certainly they are the largest we’ve ever seen here.

WOW! THOSE ARE AMAZINGLY HUGE!!! I still maintain you are an outstanding farmer/gardener/orchardist…you name it–plants man.

Thanks Evelyne. Shame that the leaves are covered in pine pollen rain 🙂

This is a spring downside, but the beauty is still there. Enjoy! 😊

Ok, I really didn’t think they looked ALL that big until the last three shots. Shnikes (a non-cursing expression of amazement).

our roses have lots of green fly..I have sprayed them with washing up liquid hoping that it will kill them off and not affect my roses.. Yours are really beautiful and quite rightly you should be proud of them , they are whoppers

Best for a few years. Try garlic in with the washing liquid – that’s what we do for aphids
