Greek Goats

11

Sunday 12 April, 2015 by Uncle Spike

We are so used to seeing goats all over the place. Our neighbouring farms keep them, we hear them every day, they wander the hillsides, run out in front of the car, scoff young trees, flowers and virtually anything if we accidentally let them into the farm, and are just part of general life here. Of course it’s not just a Turkish thing; when we visit our neighbours in Greece, guess what… more goats.

Kalymnos – We found these guys used to literally run along the road for over 1km, or a thousand yards, each morning before 7am; heading from the hillside to their farm, and breakfast.

Leros – Here we spotted a long train of goats, all heading ‘somewhere’; but all in a rather neat line. I wish I had a wide-angle lens, as this image didn’t really capture the length of the line!

Naxos – How about a hillside of goats? Okay, so it’s quite normal to see goats wandering on rocky island hillsides, but how about these guys?

Look a bit closer and you can see how qualified they are as mountaineers!

  1. Goats aren’t plentiful in the city. LOL. But driving out to the countryside I’ve never seen them wandering around a mountainside freely. Here in Canada they are usually in a fenced pasture.

The greek goats look beautiful. I am wondering whether they grow to the size of a cow.

Gosh! Goats everywhere! Goats are very smart animals and full of mischief. I have always liked goats. The milk and cheese is very good also.

Nice pictures. The only goats I see are usually in the zoo unless on a ride to Delaware PA where there are farms along the road.
