The ‘other’ bikes of Syros

Thursday 26 March, 2015 by Uncle Spike

Having mentioned the top-end bikes we came across on the Cyclades island of Syros, one mustn’t think that all the island was the same…. err, nope, there was a fair amount of lower-end two-wheeled trash too, which I must admit I love just as much as the Italian bred race machines previously featured. This one looks about the standard working order we find back home in Türkiye…

Note the common theme of ‘optional’ working lights?

But here’s one for my next project perhaps? Dunno if it will carry as much as my trusty old tractor/car, but could be fun all the same!

My personal favourite in the next image took me back many years. These were known as Monkey-bikes back in the 70’s in the UK – not seen one for years, but I guess it’s a Greek thing. Love ’em! Wish we had them in Türkiye!!

  1. oh my dad still buys old monkey bikes and likes to restore them. Although now in his mid 70’s he loves ‘his winter projects’ as he calls them 🙂

Back in the 80’s, in Rhode Island, we called those “Monkey Bikes”…Mini Bikes. I had a Honda 70 to zip around the neighborhood on. A great ride/toy for an un-licensed teen. It sorta’ looked like the one in your picture. Thanks for the flashback!

Picking up my first bike tomorrow. 50% of the way to getting a full licence 😄 thankfully nothing like those pictured
