Fertiliser Preparation Time

So the time has come to ‘do’ the fertiliser… a rather long storm has recently passed through, so the earth is good for ploughing in the fertiliser, and that means that today’s job is another one of those ‘exercise’ times for me 🙂

The trees were not in good condition after this last season, and the winter freeze didn’t help either, hence it’s necessary to splash out much of last season’s profit on some decent drugs for the trees!

Ammonia sulphate is one of the main treatments. (NH4)2SO4, is an inorganic salt used as a soil fertilizer, and 21% nitrogen and 24% sulphur. I used 150 kilos (330 lbs) this year.

We also use a composite fertiliser than contains Ammonia, Urea, Ammonium citrate, Magnesium oxide, with added Sulphur and Zinc etc. I also used 150 kilos (330 lbs) of this too.

Mixing up the grains is just like mixing cement, just less dusty!

Then it’s a matter of shovelling the mixed fertiliser into buckets and wheeling down to the orchard bit by bit. It takes a few trips over about four hours to spread the fertiliser…

For the trees in worst condition, I added 50 kilos (110 lbs) of extra potassium sulphate too in order to try and revive them for next year, if not this season – but it’s probably too late for that, even now.

The worst hard work always seems to be in the spring (right after the harsh of winter) then the sorta lull and on come harvest the sprint to the end…where work isn’t even a word anymore.
