Lemon recovery

Although two of the lemon trees look pretty much ‘gone’, and the largest is still in panic shut-down mode, we do have one small hope for next year’s lemons…
Our smallest tree, which normally yields a whopping 20kg (44 lbs) of juice lemons was hit pretty hard. In the image below you can see how the top branches are all bare of leaves, and most are now dead and brown.

However, the lower part of the tree still shows signs of life. So much so, look at what I just spotted, some flowers!!

Certainly a better story than the bigger lemon trees.

What a shame. Here in Arizona there is a bumper crop of citrus fruit. So much that even the shelters are turning it down. And the trees are loaded with new blossoms.

Oh, gosh. This just makes me sick. Will you be able to get a couple of trees to replace those you have lost. I so sorry.

Just gotta see if they are dead or dormant first. Sometimes the main trunk will re-sprout even if all other branches are useless – that’s all a regraft on another citrus tree would entail anyway..

Pretty flowers – looks like your little lemon tree will survive.

Yep, looks good. I will wait another month then cut off the dead branches. You cut green branches and they panic (unlike most citrus which don’t care), so I’ll wait until they go dry.

Isn’t it strange how trees can be so different – a bit like people I suppose.

And all from the same family. In fact, graft a lemon shoot on to a clementine and it becomes a lemon tree, and it’s whole character changes!

What has damaged the trees Spike? We have citrus borer which is killing a wonderful tree of ours. I hate seeing it decline ..

Our problem this year was a few nights of -5C temps; which is very rare here. Lemon trees especially hate the cold (as do I). These posts cover the issue we had this year Julie…

good news! i know they are very resilient- it takes a lot to completely kill them off.

I think a couple will be dead though – they are certainly the most vulnerable of all the citrus trees.
