Greek Island Cats
18Wednesday 04 February, 2015 by Uncle Spike
I’m a doggie person I guess on the whole, having grown up with various woofers in the house since I was a few weeks old. Currently of course we have Sir Bonzo. Cats, on the other hand, have always been a bit alien to me, however I’ll admit that a few have stolen, or at least borrowed, my heart over the years.

Over the past couple of years, we have been fortunate to be able to grab a few days R&R on our neighbouring Greek islands. Whilst considerably more expensive for us, we love the much cooler weather compared to mainland southwest Türkiye during mid-summer. The cultural differences, as well as the similarities to our own, are also quite an appeal to us. One noticeable difference was the cats…
.
.
.
The island cats were as laid back as the Greeks themselves, often found lazing on windowsills among other places – the cats I mean, not the locals.
.
.
.
The cats were mostly well fed and cared for, which was good to see – hate to see hungry animals or any variety…
.
.
.
Mostly they seemed oblivious to the world around them – can’t say that I blame them either. They seem to have the right idea I reckon 🙂
.
.
.
Photographic little guys though – couldn’t help but snap off a few shots whenever I saw a feline friend. Never told Bonzo though – he wouldn’t speak to me again!
.
.
I see that cats really caught your attention.

They were just part and parcel of the scene, seemed a shame to not capture their images too 🙂

I’m not generally so into cats as dogs, but I adore that silver tabby in the third picture.
My daughter has a beautiful white cat with blue eyes and huge ears. He lives with (and gets on famously with) a silver Staffordshire bull terrier.

Staffies make all the noise, but are generally terrified of cats as I well recall..

Ah, that explains why Henry the cat is allowed to drape himself across Lola the Staffie’s back and go to sleep!

Nice pictures Spike. I like the cats of the Greek islands. As I said in one of my posts I was shocked by the number of feral dogs in Turkey and I didn’t like them but that is only because they scare me. Quiz question – what is the collective noun for a group of cats?

It’s a clowder and I only know because it was on University Challenge last week!

That black and white one reminds me of my own kitty, who’s asleep on my legs right now. He’s not going to be happy when I have to get up in a minute… 🙂

When we were visiting Corfu, Greece, as we were having lunch one day, we had a little kitten unknowingly make its way into my friend’s bag. Perfect place for a wee nap. Scared the crap out of her when she went to reach for her bag!
