Weekly Photo Challenge: Depth (II)
16Saturday 31 January, 2015 by Uncle Spike
Not sure if this counts as depth, photographically speaking, but here goes…
This week’s second entry from me for the Weekly Photo Challenge is a capture of a knot hole in a plank of wood on an old jetty. İt has depth by showing the thickness of the wood, but also depth in that we can see the water below the jetty – this link shows the whole structure if you are interested.
Hope you enjoy this entry.

had me fooled there, thought it was a lizards eye (first thought) 2nd. thought was a hole in rocks with water in the bottom, it fits Depth perfect.
This is a hard one, I’m at a loss….

Would love to see how a pro would tackle this subject with know-how and some decent kit

Depends on what you wanted to show….

Dunno, and that’s where my problems start, lol. No, just interested to know if that hole/subject was spotted, how would you tackle it.

Well, tricky…if you want to show the water below, you need more light, which means change your shutter speed (slower) or your aperture (wider), and then if you still wanted the wood and its texture to show, you would need to darken that in post-processing. But you would need to be careful to ensure you still had enough detail, ie not blown out the highlights…….

Interesting, thanks for that, and thanks for putting in language I can understand!

You’re welcome, Spike! Does your camera allow you to shoot in manual mode…. And if so, do you ever?

Yes… and no, but I’m getting braver using some of the other settings 🙂 It’s a Finepix S1800 by the way

I like that the knot hole lets us see further adding depth through the shape of an eye .

It was an interesting attempt anyway. Would love to see what a professional would have done with that.
