Gardening Odds & Sods

Chores time on the farm is a never ending happening, and especially with the veggies. After removing the growing chicks from the home-made greenhouse to the chook house and enclosed pen, after dispatching the former residents to the freezer, it was time to plant some peas and snap peas for late spring.

Then there are nice gentle chores such as transplanting carrot and beetroot seedlings to larger open areas.

Changeover time in the various vegetable beds means goat poo time, and some serious exercise to dig over the soil three times.

Following on from the olive harvest and the trips to the oil factory, all the sacks had to be cleaned off, inside and out, as the olives leave an oily brown sludge behind. A quick hose blast sorts that out, and the sacks can be reused for this years hay.

Every three years I allow the grass to grow to well over knee height in one of the olive groves, and then cut it by hand scythe and when dried off, I fill 30 odd sacks (stuffed as full as humanly possible) with hay to use in the chicken pens during winter to stop the mud.

A favourite regular chore – during dry spells, the woodshed is restocked.

  1. Farms always seem so romantic from a distance. Since I am in Central California, yours in Turkey takes the fantasy to new heights! Happy planting.

You could write a book..oh, better yet people can just read your blog. There is a whole movement in the USA of going back to the land. You are there and doing so…only in Turkey!
