Autumn chores time

Tuesday 30 September, 2014 by Uncle Spike

In the few days before our first rains hit this week, I was busy outside preparing the house to successfully handle the move from Summer to Non-Summer.

With temperatures over 40C (104F) every day for a few months, the heat takes its toll on the house, and certain repairs are required each season.

.

We kept the weather-exposed woodwork to a bare minimum when building the house, so the re-staining of wood that had weathered over the past couple of years to the point where full re-staining was needed was sorted in just one day’s rather pleasant work under the sun.

Wasps are the featured inspect pest of late summer, and they love nesting under the eaves on the east facing side of the house. My annual wasp re-education process took place again this week. Thankfully there were no large donkey wasp hornets this year, coz they fight back.

Next saw me climb 7 metres up on to the roof, and go around removing birds nests and bird poop that had clogged up the rain guttering in a number of places. It makes good rose garden compost though 🙂

Remember the kindling wood that was cut and left to dry back at the end of March… well it’s now time to bag it up before the rains come.

Five sacks full will serve as kindling for the boiler over winter.

Finishing off the last of the foods drying outside in the sun. Here we have grapes (soon to be raisins), Ochre seed pods (for next years crops), and the last of many trays of sun-dried tomatoes.

Your posts are always an education. Today it was bird nests and poop. Never occurred to me that it might make good compost!

  4. Wow, that’s a lot. For me to get ready for winter I open the hall closet door and make sure we have a hoodie or two handy! 🙂

We have to do wasp patrol here also. And they always fight back. Your place is beautiful. The rains are here…I’d like to send them to California but they are not budging!
