Weekly Photo Challenge: Endurance (II)
26Saturday 20 September, 2014 by Uncle Spike
This week’s second entry from me for the Weekly Photo Challenge is all about the hardships and dangers that the little creatures face, every day of their lives. To survive through to full maturity is an act of endurance!
This little fella was found on our farm, here in south-western Turkey 🙂
Hope you enjoy this entry.

Trick to picking up cold-blooded animals. Prior to picking up, place palms of hands flat on the same surface as the reptile or amphibian… until surface of your hands is about equal to temp of that surface. THEN… pick up animal briefly to observe; safely place creature back in its own environment. Doing hand temp equalization reduces shock to the animal’s body. Most effective if ground temp is colder than human body temp…
We live near a wetland where salamanders have been known to seasonally migrate across the street. We have the neighborhood trained to do this prior to lifting salamanders out of the roadway to safer off road location near the pond’s edge. ❤

The ground here is far hotter than the human hand though… so we’ll have to try the opposite 🙂

Hummm… not sure how to do that 😦
Wouldn’t want burned hands either.
But, it is a consideration to take body temperature differences into account when handling our herp friends.
I liked this post because your message is true. We humans just need to be careful about the hardships we pose…

So adorable and vulnerable. Although, pretty resilient too.

He’s soooo tiny and easy to overlook (and get stepped on).
Is it a baby? or just a really tiny turtle?

Just a baby tortoise (we are inland). They wander all over from March to November…. but this is the smallest we’ve ever seen 🙂

oh – is that the difference between a turtle (water) and a tortoise (inland)? I’ve often wondered.

Just a normal land tortoise… we have hundreds wandering around over here. Most are the size of cycle helmut, bit this one was the smallest we have come across for sure 🙂
