2977 people from 62 countries lost their lives.

NYC - FiDi: 9/11 Memorial Visitor Center - FDNY Battalion Chief Helmet

I remember that day vividly. I was here in Turkey on that day, on vacation, being some time before emigrating. We had no access to newspapers or television, but learned of the tragedy unfolding after telephoning a birthday call ‘back home’.

unbelievable – then and now

This simple post is dedicated to all those who perished, and in particular, the 411 brave souls who died whilst in the pursuit of saving others.

As you appropriately pointed out in your post which very important to remember is that people from all walks of life from 62 countries lost their lives on that day. Just a point that all the “haters” should keep in mind.

  2. I think probably everyone remembers where they were on that day. We were on vacation in Wales and I turned on the radio in the car when we came back from a short hike (this is something I never do as I hate noise in a car) and that is when we heard of the events. At first, we didn’t register what was happening but a word said by the commentator made us turn our full attention to what was being said. We drove back to our B&B and watch TV for part of the afternoon with our host…I must admit that it did put us in a strange mood for the rest of our vacation. It was obviously a zoo at Heathrow when we arrived six days later to catch our flight back to Toronto…

I landed in Istanbul that day. I had no idea what was happening in the world and it wasn’t until I arrived in Bodrum that The Turk told me what happened. I was in shock. Scared and in shock.

9 1/2 months later Daughter was born. I imagine that happened a lot in June 2002 under the circumstances.
