Fruit : Oranges

These are one of our main crops. Mostly we have large, thick skinned Washington Oranges, which are very juicy and sweet – as we fully ripen our fruit under the winter Turkish sun.
Looks like the crop is healthy for this coming season, unlike Clementines which appear to have done a runner for this year.

We also have Sıkma Portakal, or juicing oranges. These are a another winter crop, much smaller than the Washington and used, yep you guessed it, for juicing. We generally have up to 200 litres of hand-pressed OJ frozen down for drinking all year round. No additives, no preservatives; Just Juice (literally, NOT the brand I hasten to add).
Then we have Valencia, or Summer Orange. They are just ripening now and are extremely sweet and juicy – a real ‘outside’ snack as you get in such a mess 😀

The interesting thing about these is that they grow a double crop, whereas most fruit trees have to shed one crop, before starting the next season. These have decent size fruit already growing ready for summer 2015 !

You are lucky…you can raise a stunning variety of different types of fruit!

I love freshly juiced orange. Won’t touch the stuff from bottles or cartons and I always know if a restaurant is pulling a fast one and pretending that they’re serving orange they’ve juiced themselves rather than orange from catering packs.
