Fruit : Green Figs

Thursday 24 July, 2014 by Uncle Spike

We have both green figs and black figs.

The green figs are usually one of the first summer fruit, after strawberries (March-May) and plums (April-June). This year they are very late. Normally we are picking by mid June, but with the delayed start to our summer, we are still waiting in July for the crop to ripen.

They are also therefore a bit on the small side too this year…

Checked quite a few fruit that seem to be ripening, and all are rotten inside; sort of black inner core. The weather was screwy this year and seems to have affected everyone’ trees. Such is life…

  4. We’ve got some green figs but they’re not big enough to pick yet. Fingers crossed they’re not rotten inside, especially as figs in the UK supermarket (imported from Turkey, of course!) cost about 50 pence each.

I read once that figs can give three harvests. Does that happen where you are? We had a fig tree but it died. This year the weather would’ve suited it well. Our soya beans are enjoying the heat.

...waiting to hear from you...
