Them Carrots : Weird, But Tasty

Tuesday 27 May, 2014 by Uncle Spike

Back at the beginning of March, I posted about a few winter crops that worked, after a dismal failure on the cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli front – too darned warm all winter 🙂

Anyway, as you’ll have seen, the beetroot were fab, loads of them – all picked, scoffed, or frozen now. These were the last ones – so yummy when they are fresh!!

But as for the carrots…. hmm, after digging down some 12″ (30cm) and removing all the stones, I was hoping for some shop-like straight carrots. I even planted a few in old guttering cut into short tubes.

Alas, t’was not to be. All sorts of weird and wonderful shapes appeared, albeit slightly better than the previous year.

But my are they tasty!! They smell like carrots too – yeah, that does sound stoopid I know, but wow… We now have some 10 bags of them frozen down, all scrubbed and chopped.

And so to next year; let’s see what I can do differently, eh?

  1. We grew some carrots like that last year. I agree they’re tasty, but they’re really hard work to scrub and trim for cooking.

They really are ugly little turds, aren’t they? …. but a fresh carrot – ugly or otherwise – out of the ground is incomparable!

  3. Now finally two veg I do like, pickled beetroot with cheese on sandwiches and carrots with everything.

Experimentation is good! Like most things, I suppose, it’s important to find out what makes them happy.
