Star Wars & An Oasis

Travelling through Tunisia in North Africa is an interesting pastime in my opinion. Sure, you’ll see not a lot for miles and miles; just sand, sand and perhaps the odd tree, but all the same, there are some exquisite exceptions.
.
.
Decades before the arrival of Cousin Spike Jnr, I was a Star Wars fan, so to pass through Matmata and see the Troglodyte cave houses was quite something.

The funny part was seeing all the TV antenna and satellite dishes stuck up out of nowhere – modernity had obviously arrived here too.

We’ve all heard of an oasis in the desert, but I was quite dumbstruck at how bizarre it actually seemed when you came across a patch of magical lush greenness after seeing nothing but sand and heat mirages for mile after mile.
.
.
This particular oasis was full of towering date palms. Little did I know that 20 years later I would be eating these sweet natural delicacies as an excellent source of energy when working on the farm, or as part of our meals during the month of Ramadan.

Nice post and pics. You would have to be pretty uncool if you weren’t a star wars fan. We are fans too and one day far from now hope to walk in your footsteps.
