Them Beans Be Broad!
37Saturday 05 April, 2014 by Uncle Spike
Broad Beans are boring… (or so I thought). Little did I know as a whinging kid back in the UK that one day I’d grow up to be an old geezer who loved growing and scoffing Broad Beans!!
I plant a fairly big patch every year, but don’t get a great deal of produce as we never use sprays. But we get enough 🙂
.
These small/young pods are so tender that we eat the lot. They steam very easily and are absolutely delicious served with fresh dill.
.
The rest are left to grow to full sized pods.
.
We usually get enough to freeze down quite a few bags of them, once blanched. They taste very good, even from frozen – use the small ones in omletes – sounds bizarre, but scrumptious!
.
.
Seems not that long ago I planted the seeds and saw these first signs of life.
.
[…] planted the broad beans almost two months later than usual last autumn, opting for a May harvest as winter storms knocked […]

Each grows to about a metre high (over 3′). Love them too, just without the bacon, lol.

Grandad grows these, I have to eat them occasionally ;/

Nope… never take any pills. Just fresh veg and fresh fruit. No smokes, almost zero caffeine, no drink… basically I’m boring but healthy, lol

I’m not keen on burgers a saving grace lol. I only eat veg because I hear my Mums voice nagging in my head.

Phew. Only one plot has flowers up here yet. My neighbour who planted the beans I gave her too early. But the winter didn’t happen so she had the luck I didn’t. But I’m sure we’ll catch up. Enjoyed a quick spin by your blog.

Are broad beans the same as fava beans? It appears that you have very good luck growing them.

I bet they tasted good! Nothing compares to the flavour of home-grown broad beans – frozen ones don’t come close, but I resort to them when I’m desperate!

Just froze down 15 bags yesterday for using throughout the year. As long as I pick, blanch and freeze within 2-3 hours, the taste post-frozen is 99% as good..
