Squatters In The Chook-house

Thursday 27 March, 2014 by Uncle Spike

We have a small chook-house on the farm, or a hen-house, or a chicken-hut… call it what you will. Current residents are a slowly diminishing number of large roosters , all named “Soup”, that I raised from hatchlings. But the chook-house has been the site of a few strange happenings.

There was the night of the lizard attack, when a load of chicks were attacked by wide headed lizards one late summers night. At 2am, me, Uncle Spike, was out there in my boxers, armed with two tubes of antiseptic cream, soothing half a dozen half flayed chicks, a couple with limbs missing. A horrid night, but I managed to save all but two of them 😦

Then there was the discovery of eggs on the floor of the attached enclosed run – remember they are all guys in there now! Found out they had been dropped from upon high as a rogue girlie chook laid each day sat on top of the pen, dropping her eggs through the wire!

And now this morning, we have squatters! Enclosed with chicken wire all the way around, and on top, it’s quite a secure pen by all accounts. But guess what I found INSIDE this morning…

After a few minutes I found a small hole they had worked themselves under! They might have been in there a few days even, and were very lethargic; probably pretty dehydrated. Rescued and plonked outside in the grass, they seem to be slowly recovering from their ordeal. Whatever next?

  1. Poor turtles. I wonder what made them try to get in there?
