Kerkennah – A Tunisian Island (Part One)
7Sunday 09 March, 2014 by Uncle Spike
Never heard of it? Well neither had I… Kerkennah is a small windswept island off the south-east coast of the North African country of Tunisia. Whilst European sun-seekers may well know of the large resort areas of Hamammet, Sousse, Monastir, Tunis or perhaps the island of Djerba; the island of Kerkennah is largely unheard of, and probably still is to a large extent.

Located an hour by ferry from the rather unkempt city of Sfax, this rather flat and in parts desolate island is in fact quite a gem. There are only one or two hotels and a couple of guest houses there, and chances are most are now closed following the revolution, but my times there were way back, around the early/mid 1990’s.

I went there a few times, only stopping when a UK package operation that had the deal on the only hotel decided in their wisdom that karaoke was something that those who sought out peace, a clean beach, palm trees and camels really could not live without. Perhaps they were right, but it didn’t float my boat, and so I went off to other places after that to annually burn my white bits into tanned submission.

I had never hear of it either Spike until now. I like the old photos. Perhaps just takes on back to those years.
