10th November : Ataturk & Turkey

Sunday 10 November, 2013 by Uncle Spike

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first President of modern Turkey, on 10th November 1938.

Uncle Spike is not about to dish out some history lesson today, don’t panic, but I did want to share this very short video. It is a speech made by the late US President John F. Kennedy, on the 25th anniversary of the death of Atatürk.

I was kind of hoping for a very short history lesson on a country I should know more about. I’ll watch the programme Andrew recommended to learn.

  2. edgar62 says:

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours… you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

This inscription appears on the Kemal Atatürk Memorial, ANZAC Parade, Canberra.

  3. Good video. Recently there was a BBc2 series on Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. Episode 3 dealt with the collapse of the Empire and the government of Ataturk. Probably one of the great Europeans of the 20th century.

...waiting to hear from you...
