Bonzo The Farm Boss

Saturday 19 October, 2013 by Uncle Spike

This is our Bonzo. He’s boss around here, and a bit of a nutter. Sleeps all day and paces around ‘on duty’ all night, protecting the chickens apparently, and always finding new ways to stop Uncle Spike from getting a good night’s sleep 🙂

Somewhere around 5 years old, this fluffy dude is reckoned to be a mix of Kangal (Anatolian Shepherd Dog) and German Shepherd – we think. It’s all a bit hit and miss around here – dogs are not considered pets in this part of the world, so the fact that folk all agree he’s a dog, and at least part Kangal, is about as far as his pedigree confirmation is likely ever to go.

Renaissance 025

His claim to fame is his ability to hear a sparrow fart between 3.5 and 5.2 km away. I kid you not. He’ll be yapping away like a good’un at three in the morning sometimes, so much so that Uncle Spike gets some much needed exercise outdoors, all set to give chase, rocks in hand, to a badger, fox or wild boar venturing too close to Bonzo’s radar… nope, it’s usually him just mouthing off at a doggy-friend of his in the next village, who perhaps woofed just once in his sleep after a bad dream about ‘cats’, but that can often be enough for Bonzo’s ultra-keen hearing to set him off on one of his turns!

We have chooks, quite a few, and they are Bonzo’s sole responsibility. After all, what else has he got to do. He’s a big tough farm dog, with very few manners, living outside under a big olive tree some 10 metres from our kitchen. Well, by responsibility, I mean that he stands guard all night to ‘look after them’, as they roost in the tall clementine trees closest to his hut. He is on a long chain, more like a junior grade anchor chain to be honest – he’s a strong hound, having broken a previous ‘normal’ dog chain when trying to scoff a hedgehog.

Maybe you saw a much earlier post from Uncle Spike about some of his nocturnal activities? No, well it’s worth a read so you can judge for yourself what a dumbass or ‘character’ he really is… CLICK HERE.

Saying all that, he’s not a bad lad. He is somewhat predictable, rather uncouth, often too loud, quite bonkers, but certainly lovable…

From pup to boss – these are a few other images of our sleep-wrecking, hedgehog spotting, chicken protector… as usual, click on any image to start the carousel viewer.

He is beautiful! Must have the nighttime Guard dog blood in him. Perfect for a small farm, I would say! I can’t imagine life without a dog or two. I can’t imagine a child growing up without a fur brother or sister. I’m glad for you, your pup and your Little Spike!
