They Eat Grass Don’t They??

The back field has been used for maize again this summer and this morning the neighbouring farmer obviously decided the hedgerows of the dry and rather barren looking field needed some serious trimming…

As I sat here in the office proof-reading an academic article this morning, out of the corner of my eye I saw some movement at the back of the veg garden, where the grape vines hang in a trellis near the fence… them damned cows were back in the field!!

Quick as a flash (sort of), I raced out into the yard waving and hollering in order to scare away the mooing munchers. Why? Coz even though I had raised the back fence with barbed wire and extended fence poles last autumn, a couple of taller cows were happily munching their way through a vine loaded with red grapes!

After shooing the cows away, and the couple of sheep who were checking out the lower branches, I managed to pick all the grapes for jam-making and juicing this weekend. Beats last year I guess; when I happened to be out all day when the cows moved back into the field and they scoffed almost the entire crop.
